Columbia Energy & Environmental Services was founded in May 1989 by Dennis Brendel. Dennis and his son, Brian, were the only employees at the time. The consulting company began operating out of their home. Dennis contracted himself for technical work while Brian, who was in college at the time, assisted with the administrative duties.
In the early 1990’s, Columbia Energy hired two additional employees. During this time, the company focused their work on environmental task related to Hanford Site. These tasks included small commercial environmental clean-up. In 1992, Columbia Energy acquired their first significant Hanford contract helping the company begin their expansion.
Much of the 1990’s was highlighted by environmental work; it wasn’t until 2002 they saw a need to expand into the engineering field. With the changing demand, Brian saw it as a good opportunity to begin running the family business and build the company into the engineering, environmental, and technical service that it is today. Due to the transition reinvestment in the company was required, along with several years of developing engineering tasks and steady clientele.
By hiring key engineering personnel, Columbia Energy was able to acquire its first BMA contract through CH2M Hill in 2002. The strength of the new engineering employees in the technical field allowed Columbia Energy to successfully expand into the engineering world. Initially, engineers on staff were subcontracted to clients, but eventually engineering projects were brought in-house requiring larger office space and more collaborative colleagues. Around this time Columbia Energy established their NQA-1 program as well.
In 2007, Columbia Energy decided to add fabrication services to its list of capabilities. In 2009, Columbia Energy acquired a fabrication and machining facility, 40,000 square feet of space that includes a 40-foot high bay that was retrofitted with 5-ton and 25-ton overhead lifts. This facility has also allowed for testing and additional engineering tasks.
Columbia Energy takes pride in being a passionate, problem solving, and innovative company. The employees who work for Columbia Energy are a reflection of what this company really stands for. Together, we are always looking for new opportunities to impact the community.
